HDPF.org Site Guide
Research
The Research page allows you to combine multiple resources from the website in a custom window layout.
Top Bar
- Clicking the + button at the top of the page or clicking the + button on your keyboard will add a window (up to 8).
- The ⟲ button will clear all the windows and reset your workspace.
- The ☰ button opens a list containing default sets of windows, or presets, along with any of your saved layouts.
- The ⤓ button will save the current layout of windows. You can have up to 5 saved presets. Please contact the site adminstrator if you would like more.
You will be asked to name your preset, and if you already have a preset with that name you will be asked if you would like to replace it. If you already have 5 saved presets, you will
be asked to delete one before saving a new one.
- The ⛶ button will full screen your research workspace. You can press ESC or click this button again to exit full screen mode.
- The ? button will pop out an additional help menu that explains some of aspects of research page.
Window Bar
- Each panel will have a default name when you select a resource, but if you would like to change it, the ✎ button will let you do so.
- The dropdown of letters on the right side of the window bar allows you to link different sets of panels together.
They all start linked together. If panels are linked together, making a search or other relevant actions will perform the same search in other applicable linked windows.
The advanced link group options such as A&B>C are explained in the help menu on the research page.
- The ⇄ button allows you to swap the spots of two panels. You must click the swap button on one panel, and then click the swap button on another panel to make the switch.
- The ⟲ button will reset the panel to the original menu of options. It will not save anything you have done.
- The × button will close the window.
Window Options
- Clicking the Doctrines option will provide a further dropdown giving you the choice between an English translation of the Doctrines, the Latin text of the Doctrines,
or a Latin or English word search in the Doctrines.
- Clicking the Scriptures option will provide a further dropdown giving you the choice between an English translation of the Scriptures, a Latin or English word search
in the Scriptures, or Searles Index.
- Clicking the Manuscript option will open a window allowing you to search for a manuscript or first edition.
- Clicking the More option will provide a further dropdown giving you the choice between a lexicon window, the Kempton Project website, or the New Christian Bible Study website.
Other
- The windows can be resized with the bars between the rows and columns.
- When you add a new panel to a link group, you will be given one or two options. You will be asked if you want to sync the new panel to the data in the group, and if the new panel has been searched in, you will also have the option to sync the rest of the group to the search of that panel.
- For a manuscript or text window, arrows will appear at the top next to the search bar that you can use to turn the page or flip passages.
- If you highlight text on a text window, a little red button that says "link" should appear. Clicking this button will search for that word in any applicable word search windows,
highlight that word or phrase in other text windows, and act as though you just searched for that word or phrase.
- Please see the below sections for information about how to search each kind of window. They will also refer to content on the seperate resource pages, but the search methods should be the same for the custom windows.
Manuscripts
The Manuscripts page allows you to search for manuscripts and/or first editions of the Doctrines, as well as Swedenborg's scientific works and the various Bibles he used.
Searching
- The search bar has four input options:
- Work type, which allows you to sort between Swedenborg's revelatory works, transitory works, scientific works, and Bibles
- Book, which lets you select the work in the selected category (revelatory is default if no work type is selected)
- Section, which lets you input a section and an optional subsection in the form 12, 12:3, or 12.3 in the range given
- Edition, which lets you select what edition of the book you would like to view, or, in some cases, what book of the Bible
- The books in the dropdown are arranged alphabetically.
Image
- Clicking on the image will create a zoom box. Drag two fingers on the mouse pad or scroll with the mouse to zoom in. Hold down control and scroll with the mouse or pinch with two fingers to make a bigger or smaller zoom box. Clicking again or moving the box off the image will hide it.
- Many images will have section and subsection overlays on the image showing where different numbers start. Clicking on these overlays will switch the text display to that passage. There is a button above the image that will hide these overlays. When the zoom box is visible it will also hide the overlays.
- Some images will have a link above them that will take you to a higher resolution version of the current image on alvin-portal.org. This may be a few pages off. We are working on getting a more accurate link for all images.
- The red "Previous Page" and "Next Page" buttons will let you flip the page of the book shown.
Text
- Most searches will automatically display both the original Latin text along with an English translation. Please see our translation policy page for more information about our translations. This text may not exactly match the image, as it is drawn from the published version.
- We do not have text for many of the scientific works.
- Selecting Latin text with your cursor will bring up a Whitaker's Words entry for the selected words.
- The text boxes will display one subsection at a time. The navigation buttons below the text will let you go to the next or previous subsection. If it appears on the next page of the Manuscript, it will also flip the page of the Manuscript.
Other
- The "Book Information" box that appears along with most searches gives you the Stroh's number and Codex number of the current image. It also provides other notes and information about the codex.
- Below the display of the section number and the page turning, there is a button you can click to give feedback and report problems.

Lexicons
There are lexicons that appear on various pages for Latin words as well as Hebrew and Greek Strong's Numbers.
Latin
- Our Latin lexicon is based on Whitaker's Words, which you can find more information about here.
- A box will appear when highlighting Latin words on various pages, and it is searchable on our lexicons page.
- The entry will give all possible words the searched or selected text could be.
- The Whitaker's Words website has a great guide to how to interpret results here.
Hebrew and Greek Strong's Numbers
- Each Hebrew and Greek word is assigned a number, known as a Strong's number, that makes it easy to search for words with an English keyboard.
- A box will appear when highlighting Strong's numbers on various pages, a lexicon will appear when searching for a Strong's number on our Scriptures search page,, and the lexicons are directly searchable on our lexicons page.
- Our site provides several lexicons that give further information about the searched word.
- The KJV lexicon gives the Latin alphabet version of the Hebrew or Greek word, how many times that word shows up in the Bible (freq.),
a pronounciation guide in curly braces {}, the related Hebrew or Greek words, and the different ways the KJV translates those words
along with how many times each of the translations is used.
- The Kempton Translation Choices lexicon similarly gives an H or G for Hebrew or Greek, the Hebrew or Greek lettering, the Latin alphabet lettering,
the pronounciation, the number of occurances with a / indicating how many times it appears in the Word as opposed to the bible
(for instance 14/17 means that it appears 14 times in the canonical books of the Word as revealed in the Heavenly Doctrines, but 17 times in the entire Bible, including non-canonical books),
the etymology, and how the Kempton Project version of the Word has chosen to translate it.
- Tafel's lexicon does not have results for all words, but it gives a list of every time that Hebrew or Greek word is given in the Latin of the Heavenly Doctrines.
It will give sepereate entries for each different Latin word that is used to refer to the Hebrew or Greek word along with how many times that Latin word is used
and what passages use that Latin word.
- The Original Language lexicon shows passages from the Heavenly Doctrines that directly refer to the Hebrew word and its significance. This lexicon has very few entries and only has entries for Hebrew words.
- The Hebrew Notes lexicon also has very few entries and contains further information about the Hebrew word.
Misc.
Most of our other pages are self explanatory, but a few warrant further explanation.
Shop
- The Shop page allows users to easily find books for purchase on lulu, the print on demand site we use.
- The books are arranged in alphabetical order.
- The first dropdown allows you to sort between revelatory works and collections of works by General Church authors.
